How to Teach Young Children Safety and Security at Home


Tell children to never answer the door unless they can absolutely see who is there. This includes if the people at the door identify themselves as police officers or firefighters, since criminals often use this tactic to deceive people. You should have a peephole or another secure way for children to look out and see who is at the door. The absolute rule should be if you don’t know the person, don’t answer the door.

Train your young children to stay far away from open windows. Unfortunately quite a few children fall out of open windows every year. Depending on your home’s cooling situation you might need to open some windows to help keep things cool. If this is the case you need to work on training your children to stay at least three feet away from any open windows. This means you need to teach your children to notice when a window is open and to tell how far away they should stay while it remains open. And teach your children that their playing should never center around a window, whether it is open or not.

Go over how to call for help during any emergency situation. Children need to know how to use any phone that might be available to them at home as well as memorize how to call 911. Teach your children not only their name but your address so emergency crews can find your house faster. Go over what situations constitute calling 911 so your children do not hesitate in the moment.

Teach your children how to set the home alarm. Home alarm systems are wonderful deterrents for criminals since they make a lot of noise and can alert authorities in the area that there is a problem at your house. Educate your children about the dangers of playing with electrical outlets and power cords. Teach your children to not play with fire under any circumstances. Children need to understand that fire is a dangerous element that should be treated with respect, which means it should only be used under adult supervision. Your children should know to tell you immediately if they find any matches, lighters or other flammable materials down where they can reach them, as well as alert you if one of their siblings is playing with fire.
